A strong brand begins with authenticity, not imitation. When entrepreneurs hide behind the version of themselves they think clients want to see, they often build a business that feels draining instead of fulfilling.
Do you want to be covered, or do you want your target audience to know who you really are? With so much to do, why waste energy being someone you're not?
I know that feeling of inauthenticity well. I’ve dabbled in side-hustles where I felt like I was wearing a "salesperson" mask, and it never fit. I’d admire others who fearlessly approached people with their product or service, convinced that I just wasn’t a salesperson.
The fact is, we are all selling, every single day, whether we're entrepreneurs or not.
Whether it’s a job interview or a discovery call, a pitch to our manager for a new initiative, or a proposal to a potential customer—we’re selling not just our ideas, but ourselves, in every exchange and transaction.
Feeling like you’re not bringing your best and full self isn’t uncommon for entrepreneurs. Let’s look at three masks and solutions to help you to stop hiding behind them:
The Identity Mask – You Don’t Know Who You Are
You may not have started with the foundation of knowing what makes you unique as a person and how that translates to your business.
Solution: Define your core values and mission statement. If you know what you believe in and stand for with true conviction, it will show in every interaction.
The Belief Mask – You Don’t Believe in What You’re Selling
You have an idea about what you’re selling down to the details but don’t believe in it 100%.
Solution: Think about why you created this or decided to sell it in the first place. What drew you to it initially and made you feel that it was worth selling? Sell it to yourself first. If you’re convinced, your customers will be also.
The Lack of Purpose Mask – You Don’t Know Why You’re Selling It
You’re not sure if anyone wants your service so you’re playing Russian Roulette with your marketing efforts.
Solution: Conduct market research to understand your ideal customers and create a customer persona. Note their pain points, greatest fears and ambitions. You don’t have to change your offering just tailor it to meet your ideal customer’s needs.
Removing these three masks is the ultimate act of liberation for your business. When you operate from a place of defined values, your offering becomes important to you. Having a strong belief in your product, transforms your pitch from a selling gimmick into an extension of yourself.
Take the masks off, strengthen your brand. This helps you to show up as your most authentic self to your customers and build strong relationships with your customers who need what you have to offer.
